Owl Baby Cocoon

This is an owl baby swaddling cocoon that I made for a friend of mine. I followed the “Lil’ Owl Cocoon Crochet Pattern” from Suzi’s Crochet Cafe on Etsy. It is $4.00 to purchase the pattern. You can view it here. I made several adjustments to the pattern to fit what I wanted.

Here is what the original pattern comes out like:

Here is what mine came out like:

Materials I used:

  • Hook: 5.00mm
  • Base Yarn – Bernat Berella “4” Yarn, Color: Soft Heather
  • Feather Yarn – Red Heart Super Saver Yarn, Color: Painted Desert
  • Head Yarn – Loops & Threads Impeccable Impecable Yarn, Color: Deep Forest
  • Beak Yarn – Caron One Pounder, not sure the exact color but it’s golden yellow
  • The white and black were scrap yarns, I don’t know the brand
  • Eyebrow yarn – Loops & Threads Impeccable Impecable Yarn, Color: Burgundy

Changes I made to the pattern:

  1. I used my cream color for the base circle instead of the color for the feathers (the scale stitches). I switched to the multi-color for the feathers when I started the row of V stitches to begin the scale stitch work.
  2. I didn’t do the gap on the head. I worked the rounds of hdc stitches for 12 rows above the feather scale stitches.
  3. I made pupils for the eyes instead of stitching the closed pattern. I crocheted 7dc around a magic circle and then did a second row with two dc in each stitch. (The eyes are three rounds of a magic circle starting with 10 dc in the first round, 2 dc in each stitch in the second round, and a [1 dc, 2 dc in same stitch] pattern for the third round for a total of 30 stitches)
  4. I placed the beak a little lower. It covers a small portion of the first row of feather stitches.
  5. I added eye brow feathers in the maroon color. I started these one column of stitches to the outside of the eye and stitched a curved row on top of the piece that followed the circular shape of the eye. Still working on top, I worked a row of slip stitches back until the last four stitches, then I did sc, hdc, dc, dc, ch 3, and attach to original starting stitch. If that didn’t make sense, sorry.

Also, I followed the directions I found on Felt Magnet’s Website to soften the yarn as some of it was scratchy for a baby. I used the directions for after the project is finished.

I have plans to sew a stuffing bag that fits inside so that the new mother will be able to place it inside and sew the cocoon shut when the baby gets too big for it to be used, which will convert the cocoon to a pillow/stuffed animal for the toddler 🙂
